Summary

In a series of 116 astrocytic gliomas treated from 1971 to 1983, the postoperative survival of patients with glioblastomas and anaplastic astroctyomas have been compared and related to the biological characteristics of the patients.

Patients with anaplastic astrocytomas had a significantly longer survival than patients with glioblastomas. Their survival correlated to the age, while in patients with glioblastoma there was no significant correlation between age and survival.

This difference in survival is notorious in patients younger than 40 years, it is not significant in patients between 40 and 50 years of age and it is again significant in patients over 60 years of age.

Sex, side, location of tumor and duration of the preoperative symptoms had no significant correlation with postoperative survival in patients with either glioblastomas or anaplastic astrocytomas.
