Summary

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has been used sparingly in obstetrics. The reasons for this relate mainly to cost, availability, difficulty in obtaining clear images because of fetal movement, and the convenience and utility of ultrasonic techniques.

MR imaging can be used to confirm the presence of most gross fetal anomalies detected by sonography in the second and third quaters. We report the case of a woman at the 34th pregnancy week, in whom ultrasonography detected a spine malformation and hydrocephalus. Prenatal magnetic resonance imaging demostrated a lumbar myelomeningocele, hydrocephalus and agenesis of the corpus callosum.
