Summary

Different brain tumours may appear within or beside the ventricular system. Most of them produce obstructive hydrocephalus. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the usefulness of neuroendoscopic procedures for diagnostic and therapeutic management of ventricular tumors.

We studied a series of 19 patients with ventricular tumors that underwent endoscopic biopsy beetween 1992–95. Both types of endoscope, rigid and flexible- steerable, were employed. In order to resolve hydrocephalus 8 patients underwent an endoscopic ventriculostomy. Diagnosis was obtained in 73,6% of the cases (9 gliomas, 2 craniopharyngiomas, 1 Iymphoma, 1 germinoma and 1 pineoblastoma). We discuss the morbidity and compare the resuIts with those reached by stereotactic procedures.
