Summary
Objective

To analyze the surgical results in a series of 40 consecutive patients operated for spinal meningioma.

Material and methods

We analyzed retrospectively the clinical records of 40 patients operated on for spinal meningioma in our Neurosurgical Unit from June 1977 to April 1997. Clinical, radiological and surgical results are critically analyzed.

Results

Age, sex and tumor location were similar to that reported by other authors. Weakness was the most common presenting symptom and only two patients showed intact motor function at the moment of diagnosis. All the patients were operated on by laminectomy achieving a favorable result in 90% of the cases. Three out of the six patients undergoing operation with severe motor deficits (lower limbs strength: 0-1) could walk after surgery.

Conclusion

Surgical removal of spinal meningiomas is a safe and gratifying procedure. Satisfactory results can be obtained in the majority of cases. The risk of recurrence with spinal meningiomas is low when compared with meningiomas in other location.
