Summary

Using computerized graphics, we have developed a method that enables geometric modelling of the lumbar column. On the basis of this, it is possible to reconstruct, synthesize and visualize the anatomy and degree of functionality of this part of the spine. The model has great potential in diagnosis, exploration, anatomical studies and in the planning of surgical interventions.

The proposed design permits the following:

  • 1.–

Evaluation of the morphology of the lumbar column from the anatomical point of view.

  • 2.–

Handling of the anatomical image by computerized graphic animation (turns, translations, rotations, etc.).

  • 3.–

The integration of all the images of a single pahent, thus enabling the localization of possible lesions at lumbar level.

  • 4.–

The selection of a route of intervention by MR that enables one to approach a possible lesion at this level.

  • 5.–

The possibility of safer surgical interventions avoiding neurologicallesions.
