Summary

1.752 patients with intracranial tumors were operated in the Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Frankfurt am Main (Germany) between January 1980 and July 1990. Thereafter all specimen were classified according to their histological type in the Department of Neuropathology (Edinger Institut) of the University of Frankfurt am Main.

We report about a retrospective study about 521 patients over 60 years of age with intracranial tumors registered in the Department of Neuropathology. Without age reference, meningiomas (30%) represented the most frequent tumors, followed by multiforme glioblastomas (16,9%) and astrocytomas (11,8%).

In the group of patients over 60 years of age we analysed the frequency, age and sex distribution of intracranial tumors. Meningiomas represented 41,4% of intracranial tumors, followed by multiforme glioblastomas (22%), neurinomas (5,7%), metastases (5,3%) and astrocytomas (5,1%).
