Hidrocefalia
Infección
Derivación ventrículo-peritoneal
Summary

A form of shunt infection that may be clinically silent is described. The incidence of infected shunts might be higher than previously suspected. For better recognition of infection, routine cultures of all portions of the removed shunt should be undertaken. Culturing the CSF alone is not conclusive since negative CSF cultures do not rule out shunt infection in cases of shunt malfunction.

Key words:
Cerebrospinal fluid
Shunt infection
Hydrocephalus
Ventriculo-peritoneal shunting
