La edición de 1998 del Journal of Citation Reports incluye por primera vez a la revista Neurocirugía entre las publicaciones analizadas. Esto supone la incorporación de nuestra revista al grupo más selecto de publicaciones científicas internacionales y le otorga el deseado factor de impacto. En este trabajo hemos tratado de revisar los conceptos bibliométricos básicos que rigen la influencia de las publicaciones y grupos de investigación en ciencias biomédicas, conocer el estado actual de la producción científica en neurocirugía y la situación de España en el contexto mundial y europeo, analizando su distribución nacional y evolución en los últimos años, y exponer la situación actual de la revista Neurocirugía planteando algunas reflexiones para mejorar sus indicadores en el futuro.

Hemos realizado una revisión de la literatura neuroquirúrgica durante 1998 y un seguimiento de la producción nacional en el periodo 1987–99, distribuyendo los artículos según la procedencia geográfica de sus autores, revistas, áreas y tipos de investigación. Los datos fueron obtenidos principalmente desde MEDLINE. Las variables bibliométricas principales analizadas fueron el número total de artículos y el factor de impacto. Los datos absolutos se han ponderado con variables demográficas y económicas para conocer el potencial relativo de cada país.

Se localizaron 3.021 artículos publicados en 314 revistas durante 1998. Los principales países productores fueron los Estados Unidos, Japón y Alemania, tanto por número total de artículos como por factor de impacto acumulado. España ocupa la novena plaza mundial por número de artículos publicados y la decimotercera por factor de impacto. El producto interior bruto ha sido la variable correctora que ha demostrado una correlación más fuerte con la producción científica generada por cada país y, aplicándola, nuestro país desciende considerablemente. La producción española muestra, no obstante, una tendencia favorable en los últimos años, no tanto por el número total de artículos publicados sino por la teórica mayor calidad de los mismos.

Pese a los logros conseguidos en los últimos años, la neurocirugía española ocupa una posición inferior a la que corresponde al potencial económico de nuestro país. El reto de los próximos años será trabajar para elevar estos indicadores.

The Journal of Citation Reports 1998th edition includes Neurocirugía for the first time within the analyzed publications. This implies the incorporation of our journal to the most selected group of international scientific publications and awards it with the desired impact factor. The aims of this paper are firstly to review the basic bibliometric concepts that govern the influence of publications and research groups on biomedical sciences; secondly to know the present status of the scientific production in neurosurgery and the situation of Spain in the world and European context, analyzing its national distribution and evolution during the last years and finaIly, to show the present status of Neurocirugía, considering sorne aspects in order to improve its indicators in the tuture.

A review of the neurosurgical literature in 1998 was done as well as a foIlow-up of the national production between 1987–99. The articles were distributed according to the authors geographical origin, journals, area and type of investigation. Data were mainly obtained from MEDLINE.The main bibliometric variables analyzed were the total number of articles and the impact factor. The absolute data were weighted up with demographic and economic variables in order to know the relative potential of each country.

Three thousand and twenty one articles that were published in 314 journals were localized. Following the total number of articles and the cumulated impact factor, the main producing countries were the United States, Japan and Germany. Spain holds the ninth position by number of articles and the thirteenth one by impact factor. The gross domestic product has been the weighting variable that has demonstrated a stronger correlation with the scientific output generated by each country. By applying it, our country descends considerably. However, the Spanish production shows a favourable tendency during the last years, not only because of the total number of published articles, but also for the theoretical better quality of them.

Despite of the achievements during the last years, the Spanish neurosurgery holds a lower position than the one it should according to our country economical potential. The challenge of the forthcoming years must be working in order to improve these indicators.
