Las metástasis hipofisarias constituyen una entidad poco frecuente en la patología neuroquirúrgica. Cuando se diagnostican suele ser en el entorno de un proceso de diseminación generalizado a partir de un cáncer primitivo fuera del sistema nervioso. Por el contrario suele ser más raro que se presenten como metástasis aislada. Esta rareza, unido al hecho de que el diagnóstico por imagen suele presentar dificultades, hace que se diagnostiquen en la gran mayoría de forma retrospectiva.
Se describen tres pacientes con metástasis hipofisarias, en dos de los cuales este proceso fue la primera manifestación de la enfermedad, y se hacen algunas consideraciones etiopatogénicas, clínicas, diagnósticas y terapéuticas.
Pituitary metastases is a rare clinical diagnosis usually made in the setting of known primary systemic cancer with widespread metastasis to other organs. Pituitary metastases as the first manifestation of a still undiagnosed systemic cancer is much less frequent.
The cases of three patients harboring pituitary metastases are described. In two of them the pituitary tumor was the first manifestation of the systemic cancer and loss of visual acuity was the most common initial clinical sign.
