Retroperitoneal schwannomas are uncommon tumors usually confused with other primary retroperitoneal neoplasms. Although clinical manifestations are predominantly non-specific, sciatica may be seen on sorne occasions. We consider these tumors should be included in the differential diagnosis with this clinical entity. Most retroperitoneal schwannomas show characteristic radiological findings on CT and MRI studies, that usually allow differentiation from other primary retroperitoneal neoplasms and from other diseases also causing atypical sciatica.
We present three case reports of patients harboring retroperitoneal schwannomas with different clinical manifestations in which preoperative radiological studies suggested the benign nature of these neoplasms. A review of the characteristics of these tumors is also reported.
