Summary

The incidence of post-operative infection in neurosurgery is low, but increases the global cost of the procedure.

We performed a review of the literature since 1966 with the aim of assessing current concepts on antibiotic prophylaxis, and retrospectively analyzes infectious complications in patients who underwent surgery in our department. Together with the Infectious Disease Comission of our Hospital we developed guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis with the aim of diminishing the incidence of infections related to cranial and spinal surgery.
