Summary

An unusual case of orbital chemodectoma is presented. The more important characteristics of this tumour ar related: nature, exceptional location and 19 years of follow-up, withouth recurrence: the longest period ever described in literature.

Angiography was the main diagnostic test performed in our patient as no other better procedure was available at that moment, in 1972.

We think, we have thoroughly reviewed the oriental and occidental literature, without finding any paper published since 1984.

We discusse the differential histological and clinical diagnosis, as well as the need of the control of these patients’ evolution looking for a possible local recurrence, which would challenge the benign histological character of the initial diagnosis. The radiotherapy would play a palliative function on the vascular component of the tumour in those cases whose total resection wasn’t reached, or when the tumour histopathology would have malignant characteristics.
