The results of a prospective study evaluating the results of the surgical treatment of 100 patients with herniated lumbar disc are presented. Laminectomy was carried out in 66% of patients and hemilaminectomy in the 44%. Results were evaluated 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively and compared with the preoperative status. There were no significant statistical differences between both surgical approaches when global clinical status, bilateral lumbalgia or sciatic pain or complications were considered. However, in each item results were poorer in the group of patient which underwent a laminectomy.
