El estudio de los traumatismos de la médula espinal requiere trabajar con modelos experimentales sobre los cuales puedan aplicarse diversas técnicas de diagnóstico y ensayarse posibles recursos terapéuticos que posteriormente puedan ser aplicados satisfactoriamente en el ser humano. El modelo que presentamos, precedido de un breve apunte sobre la fisipatología de los traumatismos medulares, consiste en la producción, en la rata, de un traumatismo medular incompleto mediante técnica compresiva, así como el registro de potenciales evocados somatosensoriales corticales. La construcción de dicho modelo no entraña especial dificultad, es fielmente reproducible y puede ser aplicado a la investigación clínica y farmacológica de cualquier potencial agente terapéutico.
Many experimental animal models have been developed for basic research on spinal cord injury, as different diagnostic and therapeutic tecniques have to be safely tested before clinical application on humans. Our paper deals with a rat model of compressive incomplete spinal cord injury. Cortical somatosensory evoked potentials are also routinely recorded. We consider our model very reliable and easily reproductible, representing a useful technique for clinical and pharmacological investigations. A brief review on the pathophysiology of spinal cord injury is also included.
