1Hospital Universitari Joan XXIII, Tarragona, Spain; 2Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, L´Hospitalet de Llobregat, Spain.
Introduction: Normal pressure hydrocephalus is usually diagnosed clinically and radiologically. The Katzmann infusion test may be performed in some cases for confirmation.
Objectives: To analyse the cost-effectiveness of performing the infusion test in all patients suspected of having normal pressure hydrocephalus.
Methods: Patients diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus undergoing lumbar infusion test during the year 2023 were included. Demographic data and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus scale values were recorded. Cerebrospinal fluid samples were sent for screening of neurodegenerative diseases with tau protein values.
Results: Direct and ancillary costs associated with the procedure were calculated. A Markov chain model was created to calculate the cost-effectiveness of the test.
Conclusions: The Katzmann infusion test is a cost-effective diagnostic tool for patients suspected of having normal pressure hydrocephalus.
