C0125 - ELICETING SMILE AND LAUGHTER DURING THE BRAIN MAPPING FOR THE RESECTION OF A RIGHT SUPERIOR FRONTAL GYRUS ASTROCYTOMA
1 Hospital Universitario de Basurto, Vizcaya, Spain. 2Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla, Santander, Spain.
Objectives: The cerebral representation of laughter is unclear. Prior studies had elicited laughter during electrical stimulation of the supplementary motor area and the cingulum with depth electrodes.
Methods: The present video reports a right superior frontal gyrus astrocytoma resection with awake intraoperative electrical stimulation mapping.
Results: The subcortical stimulation at the cingulate fasciculus elicited patient smile and laughter without mirth or merriment.
Conclusions: The present finding supports the role of the cingulate fasciculus in the motor aspect of laughter.
