Las metástasis en el sistema nervioso representan un importante y creciente problema en la práctica clínica, siendo causa de gran mortalidad en los países desarrollados. En este artículo revisamos los escasos datos existentes hasta el momento acerca de los mecanismos moleculares implicados en la patogénesis de las metástasis en el sistema nervioso, que incluyen diversas alteraciones genéticas, en genes supresores de tumores y oncogenes, así como la alteración del equilibrio epigenético de la célula. Concluimos que en un futuro un mayor conocimiento de dichos mecanismos moleculares contribuirán a un mejor diagnóstico, tratamiento y evolución clínica de estos pacientes.

Metastases in the nervous system represent an important and growing problem in the clinical practice, being the cause of a great mortality in the developed countries. This article reviews the few data available on the molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of these tumours, leading to oncogene activation, inactivation of tumour suppresor genes, not only by the clasical mechanisms, but also by the tumour cell epigenetic balance alteration. We conclude that all this knowledge will lead in the future to a better diagnosis, treatment and clinic evolution of these patients.
