Descrita por primera vez en un hemofílico, su frecuencia ha aumentado considerablemente con la extensión de los tratamientos anticoagulantes. Constituye una complicación importante, ya que puede producir tanto alteraciones hemodinámicas graves como secuelas neurológicas severas. Es importante el conocimiento de esta entidad para establecer un rápido diagnóstico diferencial con las ciáticas anteriores de origen vertebral. Un diagnóstico y un tratamiento precoces son esenciales para mejorar el pronóstico funcional de la neuropatía femoral, amén de permitir una temprana corrección de las alteraciones hemodinámicas y hematológicas que conlleva.
